Small changes: New Stainless Steel Straws

Plastic, paper, bamboo or steel?

By now most of us know how bad plastic is for the environment. Within recent years there has been more and more focus on plastic bags and plastic straws. I will admit that I have been an avid user of Ikea plastic straws for many a years. But, a few years ago I started buying paper straws at Søstrene Grene. And although I like all the cute different styles and options paper straws have to offer… Paper straws get soggy and that is kinda annoying and icky. So I was a baddie and started buying a mix of plastic and paper straws. But hey, at least I sorted the trash so all plastic went in the right containers (which is even more important in my humble opinion).

Stainless Steel Straws from Paperchase

Matt and I were walking around Manchester airport when I spotted these beautiful straws at Paperchase. I hadn’t really been thinking about making the change to stainless steel straws to be honest. I thought I might try bamboo first, but when I spotted these straws on sale, I figured “why not”.

Stainless steel straws are very different than paper and plastic (duh!). That may be obvious, but it never occurred to me that I was used to “holding”, or touching, a straw with my teeth. And you definitely do NOT want to do that with a straw made of steel ?. I tried and it is soooo uncomfortable ugh. It wasn’t like I did it very roughly and broke my teeth or anything. It just felt like trying to hold an ice-cube with your teeth – instant sensitivity (kinda like a brain freeze for teeth?).

If you sip out of the straw with your lips (like I assume normal people do just not me), these straws actually are very enjoyable! Because these straws get so cold, when placed in a cold drink, my drink feels cooler than ever. That’s something I think is kinda nice though, and I bet it’ll be nice on a hot summer day.

Will I never use plastic straws again? Probably. I could run around with a steel straw in my bag, but I honestly can’t be bothered with that. So when I am out at a restaurant, or something and a plastic straw is in front of me… I will probably just use it. But if I am asked if  I want a straw – I will pass!

I kinda can’t believe I just wrote an entire post on straws… But honestly this is what the world has come to. At the end of the day it’s not just about plastic straws, plastic bags or plastic whatever. It’s about people not sorting their trash and getting rid of it correctly! Yes I agree plastic is bad for the environment and YES we should cut down on it. But the most important thing is that we get rid of the plastic correctly, because that is the only way we make sure it is not dumped in our oceans.?
